Today on
Scientopia I discuss a recent article about women leaving science, which delighted me not only because it included fellow FCS and blogger Amy Dalal, but also in its clear statement that the major reason women leave the profession is because of workplace culture, not babies.
I am not in a hard science field but I recently experienced harassment (from a female professor) that put me at an emotional crossroads. I'm not going to stop being black or a woman any time soon so it seems tiresome to place yourself in a challenging field when you were born with characteristics that already make life harder. I can relate, unfortunately.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry to hear that, Tanya.
ReplyDeleteIn general I've been pretty fortunate, but over my career I have experienced a few awful incidents that made me seriously contemplate leaving the profession entirely. But I'm super stubborn, so the bad stuff just motivates me to work harder to "prove them wrong". ;). But it is exhausting, no question.
